  70. READ.EXE is a DOS program for reading and editing ASCII text files of
  71. virtually unlimited size. You can type READ FILENAME at the DOS prompt,
  72. or you can use the program's File Selection Menu. Huge files are handled
  73. by breaking them into segments.
  74.  
  75. Features include cutting and pasting of text blocks, search and replace,
  76. selectable word wrap for long text lines and printer support. You can
  77. also redefine the text screen colors. The program is ideal for creating
  78. or editing any kind of ASCII text file, as well as viewing ASCII data
  79. sets created by computer simulations or data acquisition systems. See
  80. the ASCII file READ.DOC for a complete description of the program.

  82. Note: If the command line switch /r is included immediately after the
  83. file name, READ.EXE becomes a text reader (with the editing features
  84. disabled except for F3 search and F7 print). The program's header line
  85. then shows the word "HELP" instead of "READ <x.x>." This makes it
  86. possible for programmers to call READ.EXE as a help file viewer from
  87. their applications. There is no charge (beyond registration) for dis-
  88. tributing READ in this way (as long as the files READ.DOC and READ.TXT
  89. are included).

  107. INSTALLING FROM DISKETTE TO HARD DRIVE
  108.  
  109. To install from diskette, you need to perform the following steps.
  110.  
  111.    1) Place the READ distribution diskette in the appropriate
  112.       diskette drive.
  113.  
  114.    2) Copy READ.* from the distribution disk to a directory of your
  115.       choosing on your hard drive.
  116.  
  117.    3) Change to the directory where you installed the program and
  118.       type READ [filename] at the DOS prompt to run the program
  119.       (filename is optional), or use the File Selection Menu to
  120.       choose an ASCII text file for viewing or editing.

  122. INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
  123.  
  124. If you downloaded READ from a BBS (or received it in the form of
  125. archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
  126. following steps.

  128.    1) Extract the contents of the archive file in a diretcory of
  129.       your choosing on your hard drive.  The procedure for doing this
  130.       varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
  131.       If you don't have the tools and knowledge to perform this step,
  132.       you should be able to obtain directions from the same source
  133.       from which you received the package.

  135.    2) Type READ [filename] at the DOS prompt to run the program.

  139. You can press F1 to see a help screen outlining the editing keys.
  140. It is suggested that you READ the text file READ.DOC for a complete
  141. description of the capabilities of the program. READ the file READ.TXT
